So you just unwrapped an AmazonAlexa, Echo, or EchoDot—maybe someone who really gets you gifted one, or perhaps the holidays inspired you to treat yo’ self. Don’t start the new year with the smart speaker still sitting in its box. Setting it up to play classic, pop, and everything else is a done deal in three steps.
- Alexa is also a welcome, though not essential, addition to an already attractive, affordable tablet. Next read this: Top 9 challenges IT leaders will face in 2020.
- Not only can you use Alexa to request tunes with your voice, Echo devices also support Spotify Connect, letting you stream tunes manually. Connecting Alexa to Spotify offers full control of playback and your music library, an Alexa EQ feature to fine-tune audio, with tons of commands for seamless control of your music.
- Tap the menu in the top-left. Tap Settings, then Music & Podcasts. Select Spotify, then Link account to Alexa. Enter your Spotify account details. Set Spotify as your default service for music and podcasts so you don’t need to specify “on Spotify” at the end of your voice commands to play music: Tap the menu in the top-left.
What you’ll need: your new device, the Amazon Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet, and your Spotify login info. Here’s how to connect Amazon Alexa to Spotify:
- First, download the Amazon Alexa app from the Google Play or App store, and follow the prompts to set up your new Amazon Echo or Echo Dot.
- Once connected, go to “Settings,” select “Music,” click “Link New Service,” and then tap “Spotify” to input your Spotify username and password.
- Select “Default Services” to set Spotify as your default music service—et voilà.
You may change that from within your Amazon account. Log in to your account and in the right menus find 'Manage content and devices', then click on the tab 'Settings' and finally in the Country settings. Put an American address and Spotify will appear again in the Alexa app! When I try to connect to the Amazon devices (Echo or Echo Dot) I either cannot see them on the available devices on the Spotify app. Also, if I try to play something using voice commands on the Echo or Echo Dot, Alexa will say 'Playing on Spotify, but nothing happens. You need to have an active subscription to either Amazon Prime or Amazon Music Unlimited to play songs with Alexa. If you don’t have an active subscription, Alexa will not play the requested songs.
Bonus hack: Once Alexa is up and running, you can even listen to another user’s Spotify account. Just ask Alexa to “Spotify Connect,” and the device will search for another one on the same Wi-Fi network. Stealing your holiday houseguests’ excellent playlists is encouraged.
Ready? Try asking Alexa to play the very best of your library, or help you discover something new, by saying:
“Alexa…”
- “Play Spotify.”
- “Play my Discover Weekly.”
- “Play hip-hop music.”
- “Pause.”
- “Resume Spotify.”
- “Like this song.”
- “Play the next song.”
- “What’s playing?”
- “What’s this album?”
